Presonus helpdesk is niet zo best

De titel zegt het al, dit gaat over Presonus en niet over Thomann. De audiobox was besteld en snel geleverd. Bij het aanmelden van de box op de Presonus website kreeg ik de melding dat het serienummer al geregistreerd was - en daardoor was de bijbehorende software (Studio One Artist) niet te downloaden. De helpdesk van Presonus was van dramatische kwaliteit, vandaar ook de slechte score. Het duurde lang voordat ik reactie kreeg, de reacties waren algemeen en hadden geen betrekking op mijn probleem, ik moest veel moeite doen om uit te leggen wat het probleem was etc.
Studio one werkt goed, ik heb de gratis versie om te proberen, dus ik ga de Artist versie wel los kopen plus een losse audio interface, dan kan ik los. Maar ik hoop dat ik de helpdesk van Presonus nooit meer ergens voor nodig heb...

Edit: Presonus heeft de issue opgelost ongeveer 2 uur nadat ik deze review schreef. Vandaag verder getest en alles werkt naar behoren! De eerste opnames zijn gemaakt, nu verder de software, plugins en mogelijkheden leren kennen.

It's OK...

Normally always positively about PreSonus, but I am not so super happy with this one.

For the money, sure. It does its job! I think that is the positive thing about it!

But the downsides, makes me wonder if you should better keep saving for a much better quality. Well, actually,.. you should.

Why? Because the unit is noisy. The record level input is incredibly hot, meaning it is super sensitive to volume. It also immediatly picks up white noise and crackles, which needs to be filtered out with a DAW again.

This is probably because it does not comes with its own power supply. It is powered by USB. Meaning, every voltage change from USB makes the device unstable Resulting in noise, but also even crashes.

And PreSonus knows about it.

I can think that someone on a very tight budget might have a use for this. Absolutely. It works, and does it job. It's always 1000x better than onboard motherboard sound, and offers much more connectivity options. Like MIDI(!) which works great.

But all in all, it's better to invest a bit in a better designed unit. Although, it is no shame to own one if it's the only option you have.

Good interface

This is a good interface, however, mine came with the 48v channel sending out 80v for some reason and I couldn't plug two 48v dependant devices without it starting to make noise.

You should have a powered usb hub for this interface just to be sure it receives all the juice it needs to function properly.

The audio quality is good, preamps are fairly quiet and it is really really well build.

if it wasn't for the fact that it came broken in the first place, I'd easily give it 4+ stars, however, seeing it as a recurrent problem online, I'm afraid I cannot.

The drivers sometimes bug and I'm left with no sound and have turn the interface on and off.

If you're planing to use this with a guitar, you should have a DI Box because with RG421's quantum pickups, on the lowest gain possible, it still clips slightly.

Overall, it's a worth considering interface, with great build and sound quality. However, i'd recommend you checking out a newer presonus one or a Focusrite interface if the price difference doesnt bother you. Look for one with a pad button if you plan to use a guitar.

Works perfectly with Linux

Bought this for a Linux laptop with which I wanted to record music. It worked perfectly out of the box: no installation of anything required, it was recognized at once, configuration was easy, and I didn't need anything special to start recording (I'm using Ardour with Jack). If you're looking for something simple and hassle-free for Linux, go for it!
