Brilliant piece of gear!!! Actually prefer this one above the captor X!!!

I was sceptical on behalf of this product since I've tried the captor X twice before this model and didn't like that one at all....ironically, the captor has the main thing that the captor x fails: tone! I use these products to be able to run tube amps completely silent using a headphone. I'm very critical in terms of tone and have several systems: the boss wazacraft tube amp expander, the fryette power load IR, the old marshall se100, palmer adig and now also the captor. From all these systems mentioned above, the fryette is the most flexible and best sounding but this captor comes as a close second! And comparing them pricewise, the captor sure should be the winner since you can buy 4 of these for one fryette! It sounds organic, especially in the highs where a lot of the IR-based products, again to my ears, fail (the captor X included). It's built solid, it's simple to use, it's relatively cheap and most important: it just sounds great! What else could you have been hoping for?

Recording ideas at 3 in the morning with my amp and pedals. Reamping with cab sim vs cab mic. Win. Plus, using it for front of house with the cab simulator is outstanding. Mixing the cab mic with the cab sim at FOH is amazing. Pros: everything. Cons: None. Get it. Service from Thomann was impeccable as always.

Transformed my bedroom playing and recording

Before purchasing the Captor, I had been using the emulated out feature of my Marshall DSL20CR for home recording. While the classic gain channel was passable, the ultra gain channel sounded horrendous and was basically unusable for home recording.

The Two Notes Captor completely opened up my amp and I could finally hear what it was capable of. The classic gain channel turned up full suddenly produced a beautiful crunch tone, and the ultra gain finally sounded like it was supposed to sound. I record with Reaper and the Two Notes plugin with the virtual cabinets give me a lot of flexibility.

Aside from this, it works excellently as an attenuator for home use and I can open up my amp without bothering the neighbours. Before buying the captor I was using a volume pot in the effects loop, and while this succeeded in lowering the volume while pushing the preamp, the power amp was not being pushed so I could not benefit from power amp distortion. I noticed a huge difference in tone, especially on the classic gain channel.

I will say that the built-in analogue IRs for guitar and bass aren't great, so if you are looking for something to plug directly into the mixing board for live performances, I would probably go for the Captor X to avail of the greater variety of built-in IRs, but for my needs this is a perfect product.

Bedroom tones have never been easier or better
Pohorc 21.11.2024
I live in an apartment building where gig volumes are a no-no. So my big and small tube amps were sad and lonely. I also had a library of IRs I've hoarded over the years and no way of putting the two together.

Enter the Captor - it's easy to use, it has everything you need and nothing you don't. Popping in your favourite 100W tube monster and slapping on a quality IR through your DAW or standalone VST of choice is the best way to get the most amazing and customizable headphones tone you will ever get. It's also passive, so if you don't use the built-in IRs, it requires no power.

Even though the build quality is excellent, for live, I'd recommend the Captor X though since it has custom IR loading and a bunch of other features. As mentioned, the onboard IRs are okay, but I wouldn't use them for any serious gigging.

One small thing - if using a high wattage amp, the cooling fan can be pretty audible, but not to the extent that its audible over playing at a reasonable level with headphones.

Overall, it's an excellent bedroom tone tool and silent recording box. Very satisfied!
