Le freak, c'est chic!

Anyone who loves extraordinary synthesizers simply has to experience the Arturia Microfreak. And this version is the special edition in a black design for Thomann's 70th anniversary. This compact hybrid synthesizer includes a digital oscillator with various synthesis processes. This unique audio source is combined with an analogue multi-mode filter and flexible modulation options. Other unique features include the velocity-sensitive, capacitive touch keyboard that offers unique modulation options while playing as well as the polyphonic step sequencer with a parameter recording facility. This produces unconventional sounds that are full of character and give each track its own individual touch - so despite its diminutive size, the MicroFreak gives you plenty of room for experimentation.

Digital oscillator section on the Arturia MicroFreak Thomann Edition Hybrid Synthesizer

An oscillator like no other

The heart of the four-voiced paraphonic Arturia Microfreak Thomann Edition is its digital oscillator, which handles 12 different synthesis processes including standard waveforms, wavetable synthesis, and FM as well as rare and extraordinary processes such as Karplus Strong synthesis, granular formant oscillator, and modal resonator. This guarantees an impressive variety of sounds, which is further enhanced by the fact that the oscillator type can be modulated. Modulation in general is one of the top features the Arturia Microfreak delivers: Modulation sources and targets can be easily connected with each other via a flexible matrix. What is more, the sequencer has four tracks for modulation data, so that fader movements can be recorded and played back.

Connections on the Arturia MicroFreak Thomann Edition Hybrid Synthesizer

Get your "freak" on!

The Arturia Microfreak Thomann Edition is a great tip for all synthesizer freaks who like to experiment with extraordinary synthesis processes and unique sounds. With its many different types of sound generation, it can create sounds that cannot be obtained from most other synthesizers, so if you want your music to get a very special touch, the Arturia Microfreak is the right choice. And thanks to the Microfreak's many operating elements, this variety of sounds can be easily explored without having to delve into endless menus. While other synthesizers with such a complex sound generation are often complicated to use, the Microfreak invites you to experiment right away. This black special Thomann Edition might also be interesting for collectors or users who just prefer the style over the regular model.

About Arturia

Arturia's success story began with software emulations of well-known analogue synthesizers such as the Moog Minimoog, Sequential Prophet-5, and Oberheim SEM. The popular software instruments included in the V Collection are still flagship products of the French developer today. Over time, Arturia has gradually expanded its range and now also offers a host of hardware devices, ranging from synthesizers and keyboard controllers to sequencers. Since then, the former software developer has thus also become a household name in the world of analogue synthesizers and other equipment.

A must-have for adventurous tone chasers

The compact Arturia Microfreak Thomann Edition can be easily integrated into any setup. It has USB and MIDI interfaces, via which it can be connected not only to DAW software but also, for example, to an external sequencer such as the Arturia Keystep. What's more, it is a great addition to an analogue modular system thanks to its CV/gate outputs and clock input/output and, with its extraordinary touch keyboard and its powerful sound, it makes a great impression on stage. A bold synthesizer for those who like to experiment and are looking for new sounds and ways of expression.

Great synth, dont love the keybed though.
eraldy 29.11.2024
Im used to resting my fingers on the keys when playing, and I have to get used to not do it with this touch keybed. Fortunately, there is midi in, so yeah... Not ideal, but good enough. Other than that, I love what I have seen and tried from the lil' freak. I would buy again if this broke or I lost it.
Almost forgot... I dont love the Thomann Edition's look, sorry. I would have preferred to have gotten one with the original color scheme, but it was about 15% more expensive and it had no version with bundled mic.
Oh well, still quite happy about it all. Recommended, indeed.

Absurdly good, versatile, & overall value
FrancoE 06.04.2025
The Arturia Microfreak is one of those rare instances where a product is truly worthy of all the hype. After trying a friend’s one and seeing its absurd amount of features, overall value and low price, I just had to have one. It can literally do more and better than a lot of much more expensive synths. It’s really that good.

If you’re looking for an entry level synth, you’ll find this is an entry level price for a much more advanced piece of gear you can actually grow with. Throughout its life, Arturia has continued to upgrade the software and just make it even better. The level of control included is simply superb. Don’t be fooled by its tiny size and weird looking little keyboard, as this is a proper, unique synth instrument. I love the look of it, especially the Thomann version with its overall dark design and blue knobs.

At entry level, you can start playing around with the hundreds of presets included that provide an incredible range of pre-programmed sounds, and you can play and adjust to your heart’s content, use the included sequencer, adjust the filter, etc. Once you feel comfortable with those, you can grow into creating your own sounds. The digital oscillator provides a surprising amount of options and the Microfreak even includes an analog filter. Wow. It’s a shame I can’t use the filter with other instruments plugged into this one, but who cares. This little synth is just too good and so much fun. If you learn to use its features, it’ll certainly reward you. :)

Of course, one of the highlights that really takes this little synth to the next level is the addition of the mod matrix which allows a level of control that is way beyond this synth’s price range. You have a sequencer, an arpeggiator, the analog filter, so many features in this little, well built package that it’s just simply unbelievable. I can even carry it around and create music and sounds using a portable battery brick. So cool.

The keyboard is a bit small and weird, but it’s touch and pressure sensitive allowing for additional playing effects, and of course, if you have the microphone, which plugs into the headphone jack and has a pass through for your headphones, the vocoder is such ridiculous fun. You can add that 70s style vocal synth sounds to your heart’s content. Again, so much fun.

Thomann version: Exactly the same as the normal Microfreak, but with a different color scheme and an even better value, especially in its bundle form with the microphone for the vocoder. It's a beautiful color scheme imho.

To sum up: You can’t go wrong with this powerhouse little synth, whether it’s your first real, physical synth, or you are a seasoned synth user. It’s small, portable, comfortable, powerful, and so full featured at this price range, that it’s a must-have no brainer. Tired of playing only with software VSTs and are looking for an economical synth to start with? Start here. At this price, you will certainly not be disappointed.
