I wanted to try hanging my toms because I wanted to see if it got more sustain that way. I was already happy with how it was after tuning the hell out of it but I always love a cheap experiment.
After having asked the Thomann team if this would fit on a Tama Club Jam 10”, they said it would. So I got it, and then realized I forgot to ask if it would also fit on the Tama forged hoop I already installed on the batter side of the hi- and floortom.
Well it did. Straight out of the box, without any modification. The 10” 6-lug is a small tom but the Gewa still looks perfect aestetically. It ends just above the resonance side rim.
I took of the original Tama tom holder and installed it with the small original screws on the Gewa holder.
That actually that took the most time. Because of fiddling with the right size extra washers to get it fitted tight.
The Tama tomholder screw inserts housing the screws are thicker than the screw itself, so it needs washers with a bigger inside diameter hole than the screw itself, otherwise you can’t get the tomholder on the Gewa.
You’ll figure it out. I will experiment with rubber washers too to see if the tone differs even more.
The thick rubbers on the Gewa itself have some slack in their mountings, so that’s very good for a universal fit on different brands. Feels well build too.
No flimsy vibrating toms with this one: it’s as tight as the original mount.
But that’s no wonder with 4 of the 6 lugs attached.
And the chome…that looks as good as any other of these kind of systems on the market, there is a very satisfying, totally visually blend with the Tama chrome.
So I’m going to install one on the 14” floortom too. Just to have the option of hanging the floortom. The nice thing with this solution is that I can still use the floortom legs.
Soundwise, I didn’t notice the big difference as I read about in the comments, but I did notice a small increase in sustain. A little more open.
That’s very probable due to the thick hydraulic skins, which are very forgiving and dampening.
