Revival of the greatest analogue classic

Behringer's Model D is a modernised, compact, and affordable reference to a pioneering synth classic that, in the 1970s, shaped the general structure of synthesizers and established sound categories such as synth bass and lead sound. This synthesizer delivers all the elements of the original, such as the three VCOs with five waveforms each, the famous 24dB low-pass filter after the cascade circuit, and a mixer with switches, a noise generator, and ADS envelopes. What is more, the Model D makes a convincing case thanks to even more useful functions: The filter for example can also be used as a high pass, and there is a separate LFO. Additionally, there are 13 patch points for a connection to modular devices and up to 16 units can be linked via MIDI (in a polychain) ensuring that you can play the synthesizer polyphonically - something that users could only dream of during the epoch of the illustrious original.

Monophonic analogue synthesizer with semi-modular connectivity

The Model D can either be set up with its lectern-style case as a desktop synthesizer, or you can remove it from the case and install it in a Eurorack modular system. As a monophonic synthesizer, it develops a very powerful basic sound with its three VCOs. For beat amplitudes, the VCOs can easily be put out of tune with each other but can also be used to create arbitrary, even extreme intervals with up to five adjustable octave ranges. With its distinctive resonance, the 24dB filter plays a big part in the sound and can even be used as a sound generator when it is self-oscillating, for example for analogue percussion or SFX. With its features, the Model D, like its role model, is predestined for extremely powerful bass and punchy lead sounds. However, its potential for controlling external modulation sources and step sequencers can be significantly expanded via the patch points.

Compact module for every setup

As a monophonic synthesizer, the Model D also functions as part of a setup, whether in the studio or on stage. With its compact design, however, you can place it wherever you want. In the studio, the synthesizer can be controlled from a DAW via USB/MIDI or using a normal master keyboard via the conventional DIN MIDI socket. The analogue CV/gate connections can be used without limitation in both the desktop case and rack installation. A synthesizer like the Model D is particularly suitable for musicians who want to bend and shape the sound while playing. Both when playing a keyboard with one hand and when controlling it with a sequencer, the sound can truly be brought to life by turning the controls and seeing where your intuition takes you.

The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. It is still held in the same high esteem as before, and cuts an equally fine figure in retro tracks and modern productions. The combination between the VCOs and the style-defining filter creates a very powerful bass output. An external sequencer or arpeggiator comes in handy by triggering the snappy envelopes that in turn control the filters. In the spotlight: Polychain

Smaller synthesizers can only produce a limited number of voices, so linking several devices is a way to increase the level of polyphony or, in this case, to achieve polyphony in the first place. This requires the implementation of a so-called polychain function, in which the devices are connected in series via MIDI. When MIDI notes are received, the notes that exceed the number of voices on the first device are passed on to the next. This process can be repeated until the capacity of the entire chain of devices is fully assigned, so the actually monophonic Model D can also produce polyphonic soundscapes. Of course, the same sound must be set for all devices. However, it is also possible to experiment with different sounds in the polychain.

Poor mans' Moog = Boog!

Helaas had ik tot twee keer toe in een Nederlandse winkel een Moog Sub Phatty besteld waar overduidelijk gebruikerssporen te zien waren (stof in schroefgaten op de zijkant en krassen op de knoppen, vette vegen, e.d.). Alsof de importeur een aantal van die dingen had uitgeleend op een workshop: 'Hoe maak ik een Moog tweedehands?'. Niet leuk. Dat is onacceptabel en zonder al teveel attente 'after sales' is deze winkel een goede klant kwijt!

Hoop gedoe en mijn mix bleef liggen. Dus toen maar de goedkopere versie gekocht, die wél in ongeschonden toestand mijn woning bereikte. Leuk apparaatje met nostalgische waarde.
Ná de Sub Phatty vind ik de Model D (moet altijd aan BH-maten denken, sorry ;-) wel wat minder indrukwekkend. Uiteraard mis ik de presets, de software editor en het effectieve Overdrive-circuit, maar dat wist ik van tevoren al. Wat ik ook bijzonder vond aan de SP, was de traploze overgang tussen de golfvormen. Maar de Model D is wél een geslaagde kopie van die gelijknamige oudere Moog ;-).
Helaas is een software-editor nodig om de fabrieksmatig ingestelde [Pitch Bend] van een belachelijke -8/+12 naar een meer toepasbare -2/+2 insteling terug te brengen. Gelukkig maar, want anders waren de mogelijkheden veel beperkter. Eenmaal ingesteld, werkt het.
Het zoeken naar de juiste [Mod. Wheel]-instelling vond ik ook een hele uitdaging, maar als het dan eenmaal werkt, heb je een apparaat dat voldoende in staat is om je Synth-Lead (en Bas-)partijen weer te geven. Wel vind ik de invloed van de diverse knoppen op het geluid niet altijd even goed hoorbaar/merkbaar. Dat is bijv. bij mijn Bass Station-II wel duidelijker.
De constructie en knoppen voelen degelijk aan (op de SP zat er op sommige knoppen zelfs een onacceptabele speling in van 2-3 mm; door veelvuldig gebruik tijdens die workshop?). Het gewicht is wat aan de lage kant, dus is het belangrijk om dit bakkie op een veilige plek neer te zetten. Misschien kun je de zijkanten zélf vervangen door (tropisch) hardhouten panelen om het geheel enigszins te verzwaren. Leuk zijn de bijgevoegde Patch-kabeltjes.
Na enkele weken te hebben uitgeprobeerd, kan de Model D me steeds beter bekoren. Wel moet ik regelmatig 'stemmen', maar als échte akoestisch muzikant ben ik dat wel gewend. Ondanks de beperkingen, maar dankzij de lage prijs (zelfs incl. een Swissonic-25 de helft goedkoper!), heeft Behringer met dit fraaie apparaat een nostalgische én legendarische synthesizer weer tot leven gebracht. Voor iedereen die het leuk vindt om met geluiden te experimenteren, is het betaalbaar, leuk en leerzaam...

Behringer Model D - Maybe not for me

At first i was excited about this module. But after tweaking for a while i started to get frustrated with the podmeters. Altough the unit is build sturdy, the range of several podmeters seems quite out of porportian. I mean, between 0 and 1 there is a lot of difference, but from 1 'till 10 much less. Anyway the overal sound is fun, but less realibable to use in a live situation. The master tune is very tedious, and changes very quickly with a slight littte touch. For the price, i totally get it. And it's still a fun unit to play around with. If you want a real model D, don't expect to much from this. Save up for the real deal.

I loved MiniMoog's sound but couldn't afford it given that I'm just a hobbyist. And even if I could afford it I'd probably not spend all that money on a vintage machine with no midi support that would cost me a fortune to maintain in the future. So, when I saw this clone from Behringer it was an instant buy. And heck I'm not regretting it. The sound is simply amazing, pretty much 100% like the original thing. Plus the guys at Behringer were cool enough to add an extra LFO and proper Midi support. The only downside is that the knobs are too close to each other and turning certain knobs becomes a tedious process. But for the price and the sound... Who cares?

As far as the comments about whether it's unethical or not that Behringer is cloning other people's circuits: Hardware and VST company giants are doing that for ages. I don't see why there's a difference in an analog modeling software based synth that is literally acting the same way a Moog circuit is and an equal analog circuit.

Great Buy For a First Analog Synth

This was highly recommended to me by 2 different teachers at my sound and music university as a great starting synth by a budget price and well, it answered my expectations.

The sound is really great and there are many sonic possibilities here, from some smooth atmospheric ambient soundscapes to acid bass and harsh noise. I really like the finishing and for someone with small hands, the knobs are quite alright. I really like what I managed to make with it so far and it is really a great synth to own if you're getting started in this world, I think if I went to a complete modular synth it would be a bit too much to grasp in the beginning and could be overwhelming.

My only problem is that sometimes the tuning is a little off, sometimes is just right, depends on how long it's working and getting hotter.

For the price, this synth is really worth it and I strongly recommend it!
